Day 9 - Which One Doesn't Belong?

Day 9:  Which One Doesn't Belong?

K-2 Directions:  Look at the 4 numbers below.  They are all related to each other, like your family.  You can still find one that doesn't fit in though.  When you find one, tell someone you are home with which one it is.  Make sure you tell them why it doesn't belong.  Post your thoughts in the comments below.

K-2 Challenge:  After finding one number that doesn't fit in, try to find a different one that doesn't belong.  Tell someone you're home with the reason why it doesn't belong.  It should be a different reason than the first one!

3-5 Directions:  Look at 4 numbers below.  They are all related in some way, but you can justify why one of them doesn't belong with the others.  When you figure out which one doesn't fit in, tell someone you're home with which one it is.  Make sure you tell them why it doesn't belong. Then, using a different reason, try to find a different number that doesn't belong.  Once you have, tell someone in your house the new reason why that number doesn't belong.  Post your thoughts in the comments below.

Day 8- How Many Ways Can you Make a Triangle?

You will need virtual pattern blocks to do this activity.  You can either use a computer or download the free app to participate.

www.mathlearningcenter.org

Your challenge is to use the pattern blocks to make a triangle with 1 block, 2 blocks, 3 blocks, 4 blocks, 5 blocks,.....  See if you can continue this pattern.

  • Who can use the most pattern blocks to make a triangle?
  • Who can make the biggest triangle?
  • Who can make a triangle with exactly 10 blocks?
  • Who can make a triangle using 3 different shapes?

Explore with the pattern blocks-
K-2
  • What pictures/designs can you make with the shapes?
  • Can you make a design that has symmetry?

  • In the bottom left corner there are some outlines, see if you can fill them completely.

3-5
  • Can you make a hexagon with the pattern blocks?
  • How many different ways can you make a hexagon?
  • Can you make a design with rotational symmetry?
  • Can you use the protractor to measure the angles?

Send a screenshot of your work to my email and I will post them tomorrow.

Day 7 - Working with Numbers

K-1 Activity:

Get some paper and make an empty number bond picture like the one pictured above.  You just need three circles.  Find some objects you can use such as, coins or cheerios.  See how many ways you can make 10 and write an equation for each way.

Gr. 2-3 Activity:
This activity is from openmiddle.com.
Use the digits 1 through 9 at most one time each to fill in the boxes to make the smallest or largest sum.

Gr. 4-5 Activity:
This activity is from openmiddle.com.
Use the digits 1 through 9 at most one time each to fill in the boxes to make the product as close to 7,000 as possible.
