Did you know that 70% of your life you actually need to estimate instead of calculate the correct answer? That is more than 1/2 of the time. Here is a great chance to practice this important skill.
Thought you might like some toilet paper math!
Used Toilet Paper Roll Estimation-
If a full roll of toilet paper has 425 sheets then how many sheets does the used roll have left? Put your estimation in the comment box and your reason. Do better than I just guessed. The answers will be posted tomorrow March 31.

Parker estimates there are 100 sheets left. And the roll will stretch to 1000 feet!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting. Great estimates. Check back tomorrow for the answers.
DeleteParker, Good estimations but can you tell use your thinking on how you came up with 100 sheets and 1,000 feet?
DeleteMy daughters Lia and Emmie estimated that there is 1/3 of the roll left so 140 sheets.
ReplyDeleteNice use of fractions to figure out your estimation! Check back tomorrow to see who is closest. Did you try the challenge?
DeleteWhat a great way to think about it! Check back tomorrow for the answer. Thanks for commenting.
ReplyDeleteEmma is estimating 122 sheets because the bigger roll has 425 and there is less than half remaining.
ReplyDeleteEmma, nice job using some benchmark fractions of 1/2 for your estimation. Try the challenge.
DeleteGreat! Thanks for adding your comment here. Check back tomorrow to see the answer.
ReplyDeleteJackson thinks there are 20 sheets left because it is smaller
ReplyDeletein a full roll he thinks there are 125 feet of toilet paper in a roll because it looks like that long
Good thinking, Jackson! If you can spare some extra toilet paper at your house, pull of 10 sheets and see how long that is and if that changes your thinking or estimate.
ReplyDeleteGood idea! Mathematicians revise their answers all the time based on new information.
DeleteAdvik thinks it is 141 sheets because it is 1/3 rd of bigger roll. Size of full rolls 140.5 ft
ReplyDeletebecause 3 toilet paper sheets is 1ft, so for 425 sheets, it will be 140.5 ft.
His brother Pranit thinks it has 139 sheets.
Nice Work Advik using fractions and figuring out 1/3 of 425. Also, I like how you measured 3 sheets to figure out 425 sheets. Pranit nice guess! Find out tomorrow!
DeleteNathan V FW Rm 214
ReplyDelete1. 70 sheets
Nathan estimates used roll has 70 sheets, because it looks like less than 1/4 the roll is left, and there are more sheets around the roll when it's bigger, so less around when it's smaller.
2. 140 ft
The full roll in feet Nathan wanted to calculate. He measured a square of toilet paper, found it to be 4 inches. Using calculator 425 x 4 inches divide by 12 to get feet equals 141.67 ft then round down to 140 ft. Nathan doesn't like to estimate.
Hey Nathan! It's Mr. Pera. Love your thinking on how as you get closer to the center of the roll there will be less sheets. Make sure you check back for the answer tomorrow!

ReplyDeleteThe worst part of it was that the software only worked intermittently and the data was not accurate. You obviously canot confront anyone about what you have discovered if the information is not right. bathroom brush set
